Backwell House: The Perfect Getaway

I had the pleasure of attending a blogger event at the luxurious Backwell House in Bristol the other week. It was a beautiful Thursday evening, without a cloud in the sky, but a delicious elderflower and soda in hand.

We were invited to try the new summer menu and have a look around at the newly refurbished house. I was super excited and I wanted the whole experience to be a surprise, so I decided I didn’t want to research the venue beforehand. Even if I‘d had a sneak peak before, it definitely wouldn’t have taken away the beauty of the place! The views there are incredible, and you would never have thought that you were in Bristol of all places, simply beautiful!

The house itself is set in a large estate packed full of flowers, greenery and amazing city views. The gardens have a vast array of plants, including wonderful large roses. There is also a vegetable patch where they grow their own food for the restaurant and they also house free-range hens and cows in the fields behind the gardens. It really was a magnificent setting, perfect for walking around in the summer with a drink in hand.

Inside the hotel was so quirky and fun, it really suited me to a T. It had a cosy vibe, which made it warm and welcoming even though it was quite hot outside. The décor was absolutely up my street; handmade wooden tables and bar area, plus luxurious leather sofas, funky lights and there was even a sink made out of an old suitcase! There were so many things to investigate and get that sense of nostalgia over, what more could you want?

We were shown a few rooms that they had on offer; they were incredible, especially the ‘Toogood’ suite,  where the bath looks onto the gardens. I can imagine myself having a long soak watching the breeze flow through the flowers, after a hard day of relaxing in the hotel and stuffing myself with food. What a life that would be, eh?! I’m certainly going to suggest to Chris that we should spend a night there after our manic few months planning our wedding, (which we’ve now had, and it was A-MA-ZING- but will update you guys about that with a post in a few weeks).

After our tour of the hotel, including the cinema room that is currently being worked on in the basement, we sat down for our 3 course dinner. Backwell House have recently opened their new restaurant for a wonderful fine dining experience. Being a vegetarian, I was a bit worried that wouldn't be many options for me but I was pleasantly surprised. I went for the Heritage tomatoes, goats curd, gazpacho and basil starter, potato gnocchi, asparagus, calcot onion and hazelnuts for main and strawberry cannelloni, meringue, Cheddar Valley strawberries for desert.  Everything was presently to such a high standard and came out hot even though there were so many of us to cater for. Very impressed!

I would thoroughly recommend staying Backwell House, it's the perfect getaway if you want to get out of the city for an evening or two. I will certainly love dragging Chris there, especially when the pool opens next year!
